To be honest, the task of raising up a strong, capable, God-fearing man in today's world seems like a monumental feat. Sully is an amazing kid on his own, but I have one of those "Say, what??" moments when I look at him and realize that we, as parents, are shaping his reality and are tasked with the responsibility of not just teaching him about God, but teaching him to love God and His word. Then I take a step back and remember "Grace." God entrusted this particular boy to us at this particular time, and He will equip us daily as long as we are seeking His guidance.

There are a few small things we are already doing to point Sully to Jesus, and even though he may not understand exactly what we are saying or doing, I do pray it will imprint on his heart and lead to an "aha" moment later at just the time he needs it. For one, we talk about prayer: how you can talk to God anytime, anywhere, and about anything. I've tried to make sure that I don't just use phrases like "say our blessing" or "say our night-nights" but add in "Let's talk to God" so that he begins to understand what we're doing. We also sing many of the classic Bible school songs like "Jesus Loves Me" and the "B-I-B-L-E." If you want to almost keel over from sheer cuteness, let sweet Sully sing you one of those.

Lastly, now we are beginning to incorporate Bible memorization into our meal times thanks to seeing one of our friends do it with her kiddos. We keep it low pressure and easy fun with him, but we say the verse slowly and ask him to help us. We'll start the sentence and see if he can fill in the blanks. It takes repetition and patience, but it's amazing how quickly kids pick up on it! I don't ever want to make spending time in the Bible legalistic or a chore, so we're going at Sully's pace, not pushing but at the same time, providing a structure and game-like feel to each verse.

Since Sully is slowly learning his letters, I made a set of Bible alphabet cards to add a layer of learning and fun. They are printed 4 to a page on card stock and kept on our dining room table for easy access. If you'd like to download a set, click below!

In no way do I think we're doing it right, but my prayer is that by pointing him to the One who was and is right will set him on a path to true relationship with God.
